End Grain

Our Custom Butcher Block Countertops Come in Edge-Grain and End-Grain Styles

Edge-grain wood is constructed by bonding together long wood rails that run the full length of the block. The wood rails are arranged face to face, so it’s the edge grain of the wood that shows on the surface of the countertop. In contrast, end-grain tops provide glimpses of the growth rings of the source tree.

Edge Grain

Wood Plank Countertops Add A Unique Look

Plank-style wooden island/counter tops are another option. Each is composed of wood planks bonded together and running parallel to the length of the counter or island. The surface of a plank island or counter top shows off the face grain of wood.

Our preferred style of plank tops utilize boards that vary in width from 3 inches to 6 inches. Variation delivers a more natural and interesting look. But if you want a uniform look, we will build your countertop yo your desires, as it is custom to your home.

Hand-Scraping Adds a Rustic, Aged Look

If you’re seeking an antique-like appearance or a look of authenticity, consider specifying a hand-scraped finish for your edge-grain or plank countertops. To produce this effect, the craftsmen who make your lovely countertop guides a wood scraper longitudinally along the wood, causing very slight variations in its surface. The effect is most noticeable when viewing the wood under nearly horizontal lighting, which tends to accentuate the unevenness.

Do You want a waterfall style countertop or island edge?

A waterfall countertop is a type of countertop that extends over the edge of the cabinetry, creating a continuous flow of material from the countertop to the side. This creates a sleek and modern look that is often seen in high-end kitchens and bathrooms.

Pros:

  • Sleek and modern look
  • Can add luxury to any space

Cons:

  • More expensive than traditional countertops
  • More difficult to install

If you are considering a waterfall countertop, it is important to weigh the pros and cons carefully. If you are looking for a countertop that is both stylish and durable, a waterfall countertop may be a good option for you.

Finish Options Are Natural Oil, Conversion Varnish, Unfinished, or Urethane

If you plan to cut on your counter or island top, we can discuss food-safe “Natural Oil” as your finish selection, since oil helps protect and preserve wood. Know you will need to re-oil the top about once a month. Also, be aware that early on, applying mineral oil or butcher block oil can sometimes subtly raise the grain of the wood, making it feel rough to the touch and requiring buffing or light sanding and re-oiling until the roughness subsides.

If you do not plan to cut directly upon your new top and would prefer the lower maintenance and lifetime protection that clear-coat varnish provides we will happily discuss all the finish options with you. Our varnish is professionally applied to ensure a smooth and lustrous finish, in everything from gloss to matte finish.

We also offer commercial-grade urethane as a spray-on finish option. Water-resistant, urethane is appropriate for bar tops and restaurant tables. It leaves a semi-gloss finish that’s quite durable. If this option is of interest, please call for pricing.

Choose From 21 Edge-Style Options

The default edge style on butcher block countertops is “Eased,” meaning square, but lightly sanded to remove any sharpness. Eased edges are perfect for installations where the countertop will abut a wall, for instance. If you wish to add a bit more visual interest, consider Bevel, Radius or Cove edge styles. For a classic look, we recommend the Radius & Step or the Roman Ogee edge styles.

Caring for wood countertops:

Wood countertops are a beautiful and natural addition to any kitchen or bathroom. However, they require regular care to keep them looking their best. Here are some tips for caring for wood countertops:

  • Wipe down the countertops with a damp cloth after each use. This will remove any food particles or spills that could cause damage to the wood.
  • Avoid using harsh chemicals or cleaners on the countertops. These chemicals can strip the finish and damage the wood.
  • Apply a finish to the countertops to protect them from water and stains. There are many different finishes available, so choose one that is designed for use on wood countertops.
  • Refinish the countertops every few years to keep them looking their best. This will help to protect the wood and prevent it from drying out.
  • Be careful not to place hot pans or dishes directly on the countertops. This can cause the wood to warp or crack. Columbus Home Heroes includes 2 custom trivets with every countertop, and more available.
  • If you spill a liquid on the countertop, wipe it up immediately. This will prevent the liquid from soaking into the wood and causing damage.
  • If you scratch the countertop, you can try to repair it with a wood filler. However, it is best to consult with a professional if the scratch is deep or extensive, and do not use wood filler if you directly food prep on the countertop.

By following these tips, you can keep your wood countertops looking their best for many years to come.

Here are some additional tips:

  • If you have a butcher block countertop, you may need to oil it more frequently.
  • If you live in an area with high humidity, you may need to take extra precautions to protect your wood countertops from moisture.
